What age is Senior Dog Status?

At what age do you think about a pet to be senior in age? The answer is not as easy as you’re thinking that. For dogs, being at senior age status is different based on dog breed. For example, a small dog like a Chihuahua can be entering senior years at age 8 as they’ll live to 12 – 14 years old. But for larger dogs like a Great Dane, their senior life begins around 4 as they could only live to be 8 – 10 years old.

Do how old your dog really is? There is a recent study for example this, and we wrote about it. Check out the article: “How Old is Your Dog?”

FACT: A dog is considered senior once they reach the age of 5 or 6 for big breed dogs; and 6 or 7 for medium breed dogs. Small and toy dogs have an extended life span, so age 8 for a small or toy breed is considered senior. While there are various dogs that live well into their teens, overall the typical lifespan of a dog is between 10-13 years. Have a dog older than that? Consider those years a bonus!

One thing is for certain: irrespective of how old your dog lives, it’s never long enough. So make certain they enjoy these senior years!

Now that what a senior dog is, and once they develop into one. Here are a couple of the reason why we love our senior dogs:

8 Reasons Why Senior Dogs are Awesome!

  1. With Age Comes Wisdom. Senior dogs are already house-trained. This, by far, is the most effective profit. No worries about house training as they already know the drill.
  1. Understanding of Good Dog Behavior. Senior dogs more than likely will understand basic commands like “sit,” “stay,” “come,” and “down.” They won’t jump on your pals or your kids, because they know the right way to be “good dogs.”
  1. Great for Active Lifestyles. Older dogs know the right way to walk on a leash. This is unlike puppies who must be trained to walk on a leash. Training puppies on leashes is a giant job, especially exhausting is how much they pull you. Your senior dog walks with you, not against you.
  1. Activity Level is Less than Younger Dogs. As said before, those senior dogs are energetic and might walk or run with you. Often with senior dogs, a smaller walk is just nice by them. Puppies are filled with energy and might run for miles whereas your senior dog is likely content with just walking outside for a couple of blocks.
  1. They Love Sleep Too. Older dogs know when it’s time to go to bed AND they know when it’s time to get up. In fact, they could carry on sleeping as you have to rise up. This means if you happen to enjoy sleeping through the night, an older dog is for you. Puppies, alternatively, get up lots because their bladders are smaller.
  1. Senior Dogs are Lovable. Senior dogs love the eye too! And the most effective thing is they sit still when you give them the eye they need. Puppies often have wiggles, making it harder to snuggle.
  1. Leave Your Shoes on the Door. Yes! Keep your best shoes intact! If you might have a puppy, they love chewing things up, especially shoes. Senior dogs know the difference between your things and their things.
  1. You Could be Saving Their Life. Often puppies and younger dogs are adopted faster than the senior dogs in shelters. The reality is you might be giving senior dogs final years of happiness and increasing their lifespan.

4 Tips to Keep Your Senior Dog Young

We are all in search of the fountain of youth. Unfortunately, there is not one for us, nor is there one for our fur-babies. However, you may do things to maintain them as healthy as possible. The goal is to have them live longer and stay more energetic and pain free. Here are a couple of tricks to consider:

  1. Don’t assume your dog is “just getting older.” If you notice they’re exhibiting something different, don’t overlook it. A visit to the veterinary clinic will determine if it is something that needs treatment. It’s higher to go and discover what it is, then delay motion and it becomes even worse.
  1. Keep your pets mentally and physically energetic. Regular walks, play time, and loving time are all good for physical and mental well-being. Be sure to maintain them energetic as much as you may all yr long.
  1. Keep those regular veterinary checkups in rotation. Early detection and prevention help your pet live an extended life and the important thing to that is working along with your veterinarian to remain on top of any health problems they might need before it becomes a difficulty.
  2. Add a joint complement like Glyde™ Mobility Chews to your pet’s food plan. There are quite a lot of joint supplements on the market. Not sure what to search for? Read what ingredients it is best to have in your joint complement.

ADOPT A SENIOR DOG

Often people think a senior dog means a less healthy dog or there is perhaps an issue with the dog. This is an inaccurate assumption. Sometimes situations change, causing dogs to be put up for adoption. A family’s lifestyle can change, an addition of a baby, the lack of a member of the family, needing to maneuver away or a complete other list of things can mean that unfortunately, the dog can’t go along with them. Then they land within the adoption center. These are still great dogs with a number of love to offer. Consider adopting a senior pet next time you might be interested by an addition to your loved ones. And rejoice the senior pets in your life.
